The Kubrick Files

The Kubrick Files

Last weeks’ Sunday Telegraph published a four page special supplement on Stanley Kubrick. Featuring an interview with Kubrick’s widow Christiane Kubrick, extracts from his letters and images from the Stanley Kubrick Archive, it’s now been published online. There’s also a short interview with Stephen Berkoff on working with Kubrick. Next Sunday they’re running a photographic gallery of props; ‘Stanley Kubrick: a props odyssey’. Something to watch out for.

C4's Kubrick Season

C4 The Shining

Channel 4′s Kubrick Season runs from July 15 to July 25. Kicking off the season is Jon Ronson’s ‘Citizen Kubrick‘ documentary. They’re then showing most of Kubrick’s films including the excellent ‘Day of the Fight’ and my favourite ‘Barry Lyndon‘. Left out of the season are ‘A Clockwork Orange’, ‘Eyes Wide Shut’, ‘Dr Strangelove’ and ‘Full Metal Jacket’.

As a taster to the season, C4 have put together a trailer recreating the set from The Shining. Using a single tracking shot with 55 actors including several look-a-likes and original equipment used in the film, it gives Kubrick’s point of view as he walks through the set.

Kubrick – A short film by Armen Antranikian will be shown this month on Channel 4. It’s shot as a talking heads style documentary and features varied reactions including director Tony Kaye’s to Kubrick’s films. Rumour has it they’ll be showing it alongside Jon Ronson’s documentary ‘Citizen Kubrick‘ as part of a Kubrick season.

2001 Illustrations

Brian Sanders, 2001

Fantastic illustrations from Brian Sanders who with one other illustrator was hired to record the making of Stanley Kubrick’s ’2001: A Space Odyssey’. The looseness and fluidity are at a complete contrast to the film. This article was originally published in The Independent Magazine on 20th January 2001. If anyone has a copy they want to get rid of let me know.

To celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Kubrick’s birth and the 40th anniversary of 2001, the Barbican are running all twelve of his features films, accompanied by an exhibition of items from the Kubrick archive. Shame they’re not showing the 70mm cut of 2001.
